ABSTRACT

O mastocitoma é a neoplasia cutânea maligna de maior frequência em cães. Apesar do estudo e do desenvolvimento de diversos marcadores prognósticos na tentativa de prever o comportamento biológico deste tipo de neoplasia, a graduação histológica continua sendo utilizada como principal delineador prognóstico para os animais acometidos, mesmo não conseguindo prever o comportamento de mastocitomas de diferenciação intermediária. Diferentes marcadores de proliferação e atividade celular vêm sendo testados com resultados promissores, entretanto, em sua maioria, demandam técnicas específicas de coloração e imuno-histoquímica que, ainda hoje, são de alto custo e muitas vezes não estão facilmente disponíveis. O índice mitótico é um método indireto de mensuração da atividade proliferativa celular, que pode ser contabilizado em uma lâmina comum de avaliação histológica e estudos vêm determinando-o como importante marcador prognóstico para o mastocitoma canino. Dada a recente publicação sugerindo nova graduação em dois graus (alto e baixo) e indisponibilidade das técnicas específicas utilizadas na determinação de outros fatores prognósticos, objetivou-se avaliar o poder prognóstico das diferentes classificações, associando-as à sobrevida destes animais e comparando com o índice mitótico. Apesar de isoladamente ambas as classificações histológicas apresentarem associação com a sobrevida (P<.001) dos animais acometidos, na análise multifatorial nenhuma foi significativamente associada com a sobrevida (P>0,05)...


Mast cell tumor (MCT) is the most common malignant cutaneous neoplasm in dogs. Even with several prognostic markers being studied, in attempt to previse the biological behavior of these tumors, the histological grading is still commonly used to predict behavior, however, it is not significant to predict intermediately differentiated MCT behavior. Different prognostic and cell proliferation markers are being tested with promising results however, the majority of then requires specific staining and immunohistochemical techniques that even nowadays are expensive and not suitable for all veterinarians. Mitotic index is an indirect measure of cell proliferation and it can be established in a common histological microscope slide, and studies indicate it as an important prognostic marker for MCT in dogs. Given the recent publication of the novel two-tier histologic grading system, this study objective to evaluate the prognostic value of the different grading systems associating with survival and compare it with the mitotic index. Even though both grading systems associate with survival in the univariable analyses (P<.001), at the multivariable analyses neither was associated with survival (P>0,05)...

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to evaluate an adapter-modified Ussing chamber for assessment of transport physiology in endoscopically obtained duodenal biopsies from healthy cats and dogs, as well as dogs with chronic enteropathies. 17 duodenal biopsies from five cats and 51 duodenal biopsies from 13 dogs were obtained. Samples were transferred into an adapter-modified Ussing chamber and sequentially exposed to various absorbagogues and secretagogues. Overall, 78.6% of duodenal samples obtained from cats responded to at least one compound. In duodenal biopsies obtained from dogs, the rate of overall response ranged from 87.5% (healthy individuals; n = 8), to 63.6% (animals exhibiting clinical signs of gastrointestinal disease and histopathological unremarkable duodenum; n = 15), and 32.1% (animals exhibiting clinical signs of gastrointestinal diseases and moderate to severe histopathological lesions; n = 28). Detailed information regarding the magnitude and duration of the response are provided. The adapter-modified Ussing chamber enables investigation of the absorptive and secretory capacity of endoscopically obtained duodenal biopsies from cats and dogs and has the potential to become a valuable research tool. The response of samples was correlated with histopathological findings.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the sero-conversion period in which dogs from endemic areas test positive for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) as well as the early post-infection period in which renal alterations are observed. Dogs that were initially negative for Canine Visceral Leishmaniasis (CVL) were clinically evaluated every three months by serological, parasitological and biochemical tests until sero-conversion was confirmed, and six months later a subsequent evaluation was performed. Samples of kidney tissues were processed and stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E), Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) and Masson’s trichrome stain and lesions were classified based on the WHO criteria. Of the 40 dogs that initially tested negative for VL, 25 (62.5%) exhibited positive serological tests during the study period. Of these 25 dogs, 15 (60%) tested positive within three months, five (20%) tested positive within six months and five (20%) tested positive within nine months. The dogs exhibited antibody titers between 1:40 and 1:80 and 72% of the dogs exhibited clinical symptoms. The Leishmania antigen was present in the kidneys of recently infected dogs. We found higher levels of total protein and globulin as well as lower levels of albumin in the infected dogs when compared to the control dogs. Additionally, infected dogs presented levels of urea and creatinine that were higher than those of the uninfected dogs. Glomerulonephritis was detected in some of the dogs examined in this study. These data suggest that in Teresina, the sero-conversion for VL occurs quickly and showed that the infected dogs presented abnormal serum proteins, as well as structural and functional alterations in the kidneys during the early post-infection period.


Este estudo investigou o período em que o cão torna-se positivo para leishmaniose visceral (VL) em área endêmica e as alterações renais no período recente pós-infecção. Cães negativos para VL foram avaliados clinicamente a cada três meses por testes sorológicos, parasitológicos e bioquímicos até a soro-conversão e seis meses após. Foram colhidos tecido renal de seis cães, submetidos a processamento de rotina e corados com HE, PAS e Masson e as lesões foram classificadas com base nos critérios da OMS. Dos 40 cães nagativos para VL, 25 (62,5%) apresentaram sorologia positiva durante o estudo. Desses, 15 (60%) tornaram-se positiva nos primeiros três meses, cinco (20%) tornaram-se positivas dentro de seis meses e cinco (20%) tornaram-se positivas dentro de nove meses. Os cães apresentavam títulos de anticorpos entre 1:40 e 1:80, e 72% mostraram sinais clínicos. Antígeno de Leishmania estava presente no rim. Foram encontrados níveis mais elevados de proteína total e globulina, e menores níveis de albumina em cães infectados quando comparados aos controles. Além disso, os cães infectados apresentaram níveis de uréia e creatinina maior do que os cães controles. Glomerulonefrite foi observada em cinco cães. Os resultados sugerem que em Teresina a soro-conversão para VL ocorre rapidamente e os cães apresentam proteínas séricas anormais e alterações na estrutura e função dos rins em um período recente pós-infecção.

ABSTRACT

Caudolateral curvilinear osteophyte (CCO), an osteophyte at the site of joint capsule attachment on the caudal aspect of the femoral neck, has been advocated as a radiographic criterion for coxofemoral subluxation. The correlation between the presence of CCO on radiographs (radiographic-CCO), the size of the CCO (CCO index) on three-dimensional computed tomographic (CT) images, and hip evaluation using transverse CT images was assessed in 22 Border Collies. CCOs were detected on the radiographs and CT images of 32% and 100% femurs, respectively. The CCO index correlated significantly with radiographic-CCO, but a large CCO index did not necessarily imply that the CCO was visible on radiographs. Hence, radiographic-CCO findings should be used cautiously in hip evaluation of Border Collies.

ABSTRACT

La hipersensibilidad o alergia alimentaria es la tercera causa más común de dermatopatías alérgicas en el perro y puede presentarse junto con otras enfermedades alérgicas. Consiste en una reacción hacia algún componente de la dieta con una base inmunológica demostrada. A lo largo de su vida, la mayoría de los perros son expuestos a una gran variedad de alimentos, los cuales contienen muchos componentes antigénigos que tienen el potencial para inducir una respuesta de hipersensibilidad. Cualquier falla en los mecanismos de defensa del tracto digestivo puede predisponer al perro a padecer de hipersensibilidad alimentaria. Aún no están muy claros los mecanismos inmunológicos que causan la hipersensibilidad alimentaria, pero la mayoría de los investigadores coinciden en que podría tratarse de una reacción de hipersensibilidad de los tipos I, III o IV. Cualquier perro puede padecer de este problema, ya que no existe predisposición de edad, aunque es más común observarla en animales jóvenes, tampoco hay predisposición de raza o sexo; sin embargo, algunos investigadores señalan a ciertas razas como las más propensas. La hipersensibilidad alimentaria no está asociada a un cambio reciente en la dieta, de hecho, la mayoría de los perros han estado en contacto con el alimento ofensor durante dos o más años: Los perros pueden presentar signos cutáneos, gastrointestinales, neurológicos y respiratorios, siendo los primeros los más frecuentes. El signo dermatológico más común consiste en pruríto no estacional, el cual llega a ser tan intenso que origina lesiones secundarias como resultado de traumas autoinfringidos. Solamente entre 10 por ciento y 15 por ciento de los casos con manifestaciones cutáneas presentan signos gastrointestinales. Se han desarrollado diferentes pruebas para diagnosticar hipersensibilidad alimentaria, pero hasta el día de hoy las pruebas de eliminación/exposición, que consisten en proporcionar una dieta restringida y reaparición de los mismos cuando es que sólo requiere evitar el alimento que provoca la reacción . En el presente trabajo se exponen las causas, patogenia, semiótica, diagnóstico, diagnóstico diferencial y tratamiento de la hipersensibilidad alimentaria canina. Se trata de una enfermedad cuya incidencia es baja, pero que frecuentemente es omitida como un diferencial importante cuando se presentan casos de dermatopatías pruríticas, por lo que resulta necesario conocer la forma en que se manifiesta...

ABSTRACT

Por examen histopatológico de muestras de 11 perros (canis familiaris) sometidos a necropsia y naturalmente infectados por leishmania donovani, fué posible demostrar intenso parasitismo de las suprarrenales, lo que indujo a los autores a un análisis pormenorizado de los aspectos morfológicos de esas glándulas alteradas. En las muestras de 7 perros fué encontrado parasitismo en el interior de macrófagos de la zona reticularis, en tanto que la zona fasciculata se encontraba parasitada en 1 y la región medular en 4. Infiltrados inflamatorios fueron observados en las regiones cortical y medular; contenían células plasmáticas, linfocitos y fagocitos mononucleares. En 3 casos, numerosos neutrófilos se encontraban diseminados entre las células inflamatorias; en 1 de esos casos, los neutrófilos eran predominantes y originaban microabscesos, lo cual es una observación que no ha sido relatada en la literatura disponible
